This romantic private home is enclosed in a high walled garden with
many trees and a sit-float pool with a waterfall. It is located in
Tulum Pueblo, a short five minute drive from the powdery white sand
beaches and the famous Tulum Ruins by the sea; in the original ancient
maya neighborhood of Tulum; a place the Chan Santa Cruz Maya have
inhabited for centuries. Be local or tourist as you like in this
culturally rich and friendly place. Within easy walking distance are
transportation, restaurants, shops, fiestas, bank with ATM, Ball Games
(kids are welcome to join in), dances, live theatre and a Circus
sometimes.Tulum has a variety of ever changing activities to choose
from. A stroll in the evenings is highly recommended, the town comes
alive atnight and the bird songs are exquisite! The beach is
separated from the village by dense jungle and is not walkable without
a guide but an easy drive or bikes can be rented to take you to the
beaches with easy access and parking.
There are two houses on the property, a Main House and a Cottage. The
Main House has 2 separate bedrooms, a large bathroom and a main room
consisting of a kitchen, dining and living area with 2 "day beds"
single beds where 2 more guests can sleep. Maximum 6 people. It has a
lovely balcony overlooking the garden on the second floor. The Cottage
has 2 units. One is below near the pool the the other is above
overlooking the pool. Each "Cottage Unit" is a large room with a
kitchen area at one end; a large locking closet, a bathroom and a
double bed and a single fold down couch for a maximum of 3 people in
each Cottage unit. Main House and Cottage can be rented separately or
together depending on size of your group and availability. The small
sit/float pool and front patio garden area are shared by all guests.
The Main House has it's own private garden in back part of property.
Maya neighbors did all the construction of stone, fine hardwoods and
tile; a reminder of where you are. The style...of the houses..well, I
call it "accidental architecture", the end result of an on-going
collaboration between various local builders and a gringa (me). First
2 houses were built and were destroyed by hurricane Roxane 13 years
ago. Only floors remained. Ouch! These re-constructions are
hurricane proof as they come is the hope. They appear ageless and
without definable style of solid stone. When I am there guests often
ask what part of this place was here when you started, assuming they
were built a long time ago. I continue to enjoy and rediscover this
place on each visit. There is a comfy hard to explain atmosphere here
in this garden and in these houses. I find much comfort, and
inspiration is here. The houses are an interesting blend
of ancient and modern and have all the comforts of home and not too
many; just enough. A great place to bring a group of friends or
family and also for one travelling alone, very safe and many honeymoon
couples have stayed and my maid loves doing special preparations for
them! It is a wonderful spot to enjoy the unique privacy of a home in
a Maya village in Mexico and to dip into the tourist scene if and when
desired.
Both houses have very high ceilings, thick stone walls, ceiling and
floor fans throughout and this along with all the trees, creates a
very cool atmosphere indoors and in the gardens. The Cottage Units
each have A/Cfor hotter months. Unlike the Main House, it has no
large trees shading it or thatch on the roof. The pool is a lovely
spot to sink into after excursions or to just plain chill out with a
cold drink, float and watch the hummingbirds, lay in a hammock and
read a bood and children love the pool of course!
Testimonials:
….Tulum feels alive. So many good restaurants, very cheap.
Delicious sweet pineapples, $4.usd at home…here $1.50 or less.
Incredible! We also found our way to the pastry shop and ended up
trying one of almost everything. I guess it wasn't a good idea to go
there after diving all day but we certainly enjoyed our dessert
brownies and pastries the next morning, by the pool, were quite a
treat. We ate at several of the places you mentioned and also
discovered a couple on our own. The food was inexpensive and quite
tasty and the casual atmosphere (shorts, tshirt, barefoot accepted)
sure made it easy to go anywhere for a great meal. Coqueta (cat) was
the perfect hostess. We were able to do 6 cenote dives and 4 ocean
dives and I must say diving the cenotes was quite an adventure --
very different from diving in the ocean. Tulum is bursting with
color! The beaches were beautiful and it seemed as if everything was
in bloom -- so unlike things in Indiana. We spent a day a Tankah
Caleta and it was truly one of the most relaxing days of my life. We
got there fairly early in the morning so we had the place to
ourselves until early afternoon. It was so nice having a week where
I only had to worry about finding a shady palm tree to lay under; one
that would provide plenty of sun for an afternoon nap. It was a
fantastic vacation! I'm really glad I did the web search and found
your house. The house is beautiful and so very comfortable. It is
easy to relax and wind down. Lots of wonderful memories and time
well spent with my family. Peg Main House March 2005
This was our first trip to Tulum and we feel really lucky to have
found your place. Your insights & advice about the great spots & not
so great ones was a huge help in making this a great experience. We
absolutely love your place and everything you have done with it.

….we were starting to fanaticize that we’d never have to leave. We
could live here easy. Everything we need is close by. The
townspeople are so kind and beautiful. There’s so much here to do and
see and be. Thank you Donna for being our host. Do you rent by the
year? Tira & Patrick Cot. March 2005
We enjoyed your lovely house. The courtyard and gardens are
perfect. We spent hours here. The beaches are the prettiest we’ve
ever seen….Kathleen & family, Main House March 2005
Heartfelt thanks for sharing your little piece of paradise. The
garden and sitting pool provided a peaceful reprieve. We had so much
fun going out to eat and dancing at the local bars and restaurants.
Thanks so much for the good tips and helpful information. I only
wish that we could stay longer. Dan and Patricia-Cottage April 2005
…What a fantastic house. Our 4 Yr. Old spent the first 2 days in the
pond/pool. Binda & Richard, Main April 2005
…The Casa was mucho bonita. We love the cat and will miss her. Our
time in Tulum has been magic. Thank you. Jason, Lauren Daniel &
Hart, Main House May 2005
Thanks so much for your hospitality and providing this wonderful
house. Masumi is especially thankful for your advice on how to cure
her poison tree infection with the natural antidote ; the tree bark
your friends found for her. We enjoyed the shady garden with your
beautiful landscaping and I enjoyed every moment to talk to you.
Thanks.
Jergen & Masumi, Main House May 2005
"We returned Tuesday after almost three weeks in Mexico. We had a
great time exploring the Yucatan, and our stay at your house was
wonderful. After living in very close quarters for most of the trip,
the whole family really enjoyed being able to spread out a bit. Our
15 year old daughter loved the loft bedroom and pronounced the bed up
there as the most comfortable on our trip. Our 10 year old son
quickily made friends with the cat and he was fascinated by the
cenote. I spent a lot of time reading in the courtyard and enjoying
your lovely garden. The fountain is the perfect touch. We loved
Tulum and found the beaches to be the most beautiful of the many we
visited on this trip. We really enjoyed exploring the town, and
especially enjoyed the lively atmosphere on Saturday night. Thank
you for sharing your lovely house with us. We hope to visit again
someday. Best Regards, Kathleen"(Family of 4-Main House March 2005)
"We very much enjoyed staying in Tulum and I would rent your house
again. I liked being in town, a real town. I think it was very good
first experience for my niece...authentic Mexican rather than mega-
resort. Complete with Mama Pig and 6 piglets on one back street...It
was wonderful, went too fast, and I'm ready to go back. I'm an ESL
teacher and it definitely rekindled my desire to teach in Mexico.
Gracias para la casa! Lynn"
All units have full service kitchens with gas stoves, refrigerators,
blenders & coffee makers and necessary dishes and cooking utensils,
hot and cold water, purified drinking water, blenders, coffee makers
and cable tv.
Main House has microwave oven and dvd player. Cottage has a cd and
tape player.
Linens and towels are provided and Maid service two times weekly
included in cost. For an extra charge, meals can be cooked for you
and laundry done ($5.00 load) and pre travel grocery shopping and
daily maid service.
We have hammocks and mosquito nets for all beds if needed. All rooms
are screened and if screen doors are kept shut, you will be free of
them. They tend to come and go and have a fairly predictable
timetable...after a rain and after 4 o'clock in the evening.
For 1 or 2 people, either Cottage unit has all you will need or if you
have a child, 3 people can occupy each cottage unit. For groups of 3
couples, you could rent either Main House only or Main House and 1
Cottage Unit. For a Family of 4 or 6 the Main House only will
accomodate or you may choose to rent both Main House and 1 cottage unit.
Activities There are many and if you stay at “StoneTree”, I will
give you a list of my special discoveries and you will find new
ones! The beaches in Mexico are all public 20 meters from the shore,
so access is not a problem. If there is a resort on them you may
need to pay a dollar if you wish to use a beach chair or cabana on a
resort beach. Buy a drink or a dinner and they will be well pleased
by your visit. I love going to the beach and coming home to 24 hour
electricity, no sand in my bed or on my floor and the rooster crowing
to wake me up next door; my frig. etc., a home and a place to rest
from the immense energy of the sea and sand and to enjoy the community
of the village. I like seeing the variety of flora and fauna in the
garden and village that thrive in the less intense atmosphere.
Ceynot’s dot the area all around Tulum and there are many
to explore; a must do. The cool crystal clear fresh water is lovely
for swimming, snorkeling or cave driving. They were formed by a meteor
which hit the earth near Merida…the one thatcaused the extermination
of the dinosaurs and there are many of them. Some in caves with
stalactites and stalagmites.
Maya Ruin sites are also abundant. To name a few; Tulum (5 min.),
Coba (30 min drive, Xhel Ha( 20 min.), Chitzen Itza (1 Hr.) Fishing
and boat trips for snorkeling on the reef. Guided trips can be
arranged by my manager if you choose. Chetumal has a terrific
museum and many more ruin sites (2.5 Hr.) More to do there
also. I continue to find the newly discovered ruins and ceynots
after 18 years. Come! You will not be disappointed and if you
choose my place to stay. We welcome you and put forth our best
efforts to share with you and make your stay one in keeping with the
comfort level we enjoy and to share with you this place with
respect for those who are natives to the area.
