activities and attractions in Progreso Yucatan
Local:
When traveling to Progreso, you can throw out any pre-conceived
ideas of a flashy and touristy presence of most resort towns in
Mexico. You will be surprised to find that you are immersed in a
community of friendly and helpful locals. This is true of most of
the Yucatan, as it´s roots are founded by the legacy of the Mayan
culture.
Since the December to March temperatures are a comfortable 70 - 75
degrees F during the day and into the low 60's at night, Canadians,
Americans and Europeans migrate here during the cold winter months.
Therefore, you will find many English speaking vacationers and
residents.
In Progreso you will find a large supermarket, an outdoor market
with local produce, currency exchange offices, telegraph and post
offices, laundries, a two screen movie theater, 24 hour pharmacies
and coffee shops with Cappuchino. There are internet cafes, buses
and plenty of taxis to help you get around. Buses run frequently
from Progreso to the Merida bus station. The high quality, and
reasonably priced medical and dental services are another reason
northerners are comfortable in Progreso.
The beachfront condo is located 4 1/2 blocks away from the Malecon,
which offers a 10 block long beachfront walkway. You will find many
fine seafood restaurants across from the beach and drinks and food
service on the sand. Bannanas, jet skis and power boat rides are
available on the beach near the restaurants. Sailing, windsurfing,
kayaking, etc. are available at a beach club on the west side of
Progreso, a short distance away. Bicycles can be rented for $1.00
per day. Fishing can be arranged with a local fisherman or at the
marina.
Site Seeing:
Immerse yourself in Mayan culture by taking the tour of "Ruta Puc"
which includes Mayan ruins such as the Dzibilchaltun ruins, the
pyramids of Chichen Itza and Uxmal. See the world famous Haciendas
featured in Architectural Digest, now Hotels and Restaurants.
Yucatan is an ecotourism destination. Discover its unique
environment, investigate the jungle and its wildlife, visit coastal
estuaries and mangroves which support an extraordinary and diverse
population of aviary and marine life and explore underground caves
and cenotes. Visit the amazing pink flamingo santuaries in nearby
Uaymitun or Celestun (west of Merida).
Merida:
When you are ready to visit the beautiful city of Merida (the White
City) you mustn´t miss the historical mansions along Paseo Montejo
and the downtown area. It is full of beautiful old European style
buildings. Merida is just a 20 minute air conditioned bus ride
away. The Gran Plaza a very large mall at the north end of the
Paseo Montejo has many shops, two movie theaters with 14 screens, a
great Italian restaurant called Italliannis, a food court and many
local stores and restaurants.
Or you could play golf at the La Ceiba Golf Club, green fee of $900
pesos (est. $82 usd), located 15 minutes by car from the condo.
