Ajijic Vacation Rentals, Condos, Villas and Beach Rentals
Ajijic
, pronounced “ah-hee-heek,” is a cobblestone village located at over 5000 feet in elevation on the shores of Lake Chapala in the state of Jalisco, Central Mexico. It is approximately 35 miles south of Guadalajara. Except for the main highway that runs along the lake, all of the streets in Ajijic are cobblestone, which makes it rather bumpy for driving but very picturesque. Also often called “Lakeside,” Ajijic has a population of around 7,000, a wonderful climate and low cost of living. Lake Chapala is approximately 50 miles long from east to west and about 12.5 miles wide from north to south. It has a surface area of 405 square miles ( 1,050 square kilometers,) making it the largest natural lake in Mexico. It is the third largest lake in Latin America, after Lake Titicaca and Lake Nicaragua in Central America. Despite its size, Lake Chapala is quite shallow and polluted, so it is not a good place for water sports or fishing – but is a very beautiful lake for viewing. Hiking, horseback riding, golf, tennis, and bicycling are activities in the area, and Ajijic has many restaurants, galleries, concerts and active clubs and organizations in which to participate. In all, twelve cities surround Lake Chapala, but most tourists gravitate to the north shore municipalities of Ajijic, Chapala and Jocotepec.
