Calafia , which according to a 15th century Spanish myth, was the name of a queen who reigned over an island named California, is a tiny village located on a rocky cliff on the Baja California peninsula. Just twenty minutes from the U.S. border and just south of the town of Rosarito, Calafia is home to the only Mexican theme park. It contains a wide variety of archaeological replicas from Mesodermic cultures and California missions, as well as replicas of cave paintings and a Spanish fort with a galleon dating from the 16th century. This historic little spot also has shopping and restaurants, a large, white sand beach for swimming, sunning, romantic walks, surfing, and great views of the ocean. Calafia Point is surrounded by several consistent surf breaks and is also a great spot for boogie boarding. Two outstanding golf courses are within twenty minutes of Calafia. The nearby town of Rosarito is home to Fox Studios, which was the filming site of the popular movie, “Titanic,” in 1996. It also has lots of shops to explore, as well as international restaurants, local restaurants featuring authentic fish tacos and other Mexican fare, nearby historical and archeological sites and quite a wild nightlife that is popular with students on spring break.

Calafia Weather & Climate

The Baja Peninsula is generally one of the hottest and driest places on the North American continent. However, a small coastal area of northwestern Mexico surrounding Tijuana has more of a Mediterranean climate with considerable coastal fog and a winter rainy season similar to southern California. Here the rainy season runs November through March, with very little to no precipitation the rest of the year. Winter storms, generated as far away as the Gulf of Alaska provide areas along the coast west of the mountains with up to 12 inches of rain per year – which is enough to support sizable forest at the higher elevations. Evenings can be chilly any time of the year in comparison to warm daytime temperatures.
