Celestun Beach is a tranquil fishing village, with an air of unpretentiousness and Gulf-coast flavor that sits at the end of a spit of land on the western hump of the Yucatan. Celestun means “painted stone,” and this small town’s 4,600 inhabitants still preserve the traditions and folklore of the Mayan culture. It’s an ideal vacation spot with excellent seafood restaurants by the beach, inexpensive waterfront hotels, refreshing breezes and warm, shallow waters. Celestun Beach is the only entry point to the “Parque Natural Ria Celestun, a 100,000-acre wildlife reserve with extensive mangrove forests, salt flats, and one of the largest colonies of flamingos in North America. The best months to see the birds is April – June. Celestun boasts long stretches of pristine beaches and warm, emerald waters. It’s a great place to enjoy the sun and sand, but avoid crowds and noise. Besides birdwatching, Celestun Beach is a good place for shelling, fishing, boat tours and swimming. Expeditions are available for jungle hikes, three-hour long bike tours, crocodile tours and trips to the Mayan ruins and haciendas.

Celestun Beach Weather & Climate

The Yucatan is generally wetter than the Pacific Coast and northern Mexico. It can rain here anytime of the year along the coast, but the “official” rainy season runs June through October. Expect hot temperatures, high humidity and monsoon-like downpours in late afternoon and evening, June through August. April and May, though drier than summer, tends to be the warmest months of the year. Ocean breezes help keep summers tolerable. Inland jungle regions are more humid with even higher temperatures. It in this region, it tends to rain almost every day, but at the same time of the day for a short period. The hurricane season runs June through October in the Caribbean, but plenty of advance warning is given for these types of storms.
