Chichen Itza Vacation Rentals, Condos, Villas and Beach Rentals
Chichen Itza
is located approximately two hours west of Cancun and 75 miles east of Merida on the Yucatan Peninsula. It is one of the largest and most fascinating archaeological sites in Mexico and one of the most visited tourist spots on the Yucatan. It’s rated among the most important of the Maya culture and covers an area of approximately six square miles where hundreds of buildings once stood. Now most are mounds, but about thirty may still be seen by tourists. Chichen Itza is actually two cities: one that was ruled by the Mayas during the sixth to the tenth century and the other a Toltec-Mayan city that emerged around the year 1000 A.D. Most of the prominent buildings at Chichen Itza were developed during the citys rebirth under Toltec rule. At the entrance to Chichen Itza is a large visitors’ complex, a small museum, dining room, restrooms, a few gift shops and vendor stands. You can easily visit from Merida and return to the city by nightfall, or you can stay overnight near the ruins. If you do stay, be sure to enjoy the wonderful “Light & Sound Show” that is held there every evening. The hotels in the Chichen Itza region are in Piste, a village one mile beyond the ruins, and in Valladolid, which is about 25 miles beyond the ruins. Right next to Chichen Itza is a Club Med, Mayaland and Hacienda Chichen. All three of these share a back entrance to the ruins, which allows their guests continuous access.
