Cordoba
is a bustling city of 200,000 located in the state of Veracruz in central Mexico. It is a place rich in history, where the Treaty of Cordoba was signed, granting Mexico independence from Spain. The architecture of the city is very elegant and impressive, with buildings painted in beautiful, pale pastel colors. The city’s “zocalo,” or town square, is dominated by the Parroqula de la Inmaculada Concepcion. This church, constructed in 1621, combines both Baroque and Neoclassical styles. It is now the city’s primary place of worship, and is distinctive for its infamous bells, which can be heard for miles around. The square also has a very pretty park that is a great place for a midday stroll. Across from the town square is a museum that houses historical documents and archaeological finds. Besides exploring the town, other recreational opportunities in Cordoba include hiking, biking, visiting a nearby volcanic cone, birding and golf. The city of Cordoba is easy to navigate, has affordable and comfortable lodging, and has great seafood restaurants. The town’s tourist office is located in the Palacio Municipal on the northwest side of the town square.
