Cuernavaca is a city built on a series of hills, reminiscent of San Francisco. It is located just 53 miles from Mexico City in central Mexico. The balmy, spring-like, semitropical climate is a big draw for Cuernavaca, where Cortes built his own summer place in the 16th century. Cobblestone streets, museums, spectacular restaurants and hotels await you in this town known as “The City of Eternal Spring.” Most sites are centered on the central Plaza de Armas. Here, you will find sidewalk cafes, craft shops and vendors from neighboring villages, selling arts and crafts, leather goods and jewelry. Across the street is a smaller square that puts on free concerts most Thursday evenings under its colonial arcade. Other places of interest in Cuernavaca include the Borda Gardens, the most visited place in the city. These spectacular gardens were designed in the late 18th century by a member of the Borda family for one of his relatives. A café and bookstore are also located in the gardens. Also, don’t miss the Diego Rivera murals in the Palacio de Cortes. Cuernavaca has culture, art, recreation, historical sights, plus, its popularity as a vacation spot has created quite a glitzy nightlife, as well. It makes a wonderful spot to base a central Mexico vacation, where you can take your time to explore all the city has to offer.

Cuernavaca Weather & Climate

South-Central Mexico, in the area surrounding Mexico City, has an altitude of 7,240 feet above sea level. Due to this altitude, the region enjoys a cooler climate than the coastal areas, which is often a much-welcomed relief to visitors after exposure to the heat of the coastal cities and resorts. However, keep in mind that temperatures will become hotter and more humid the further south you travel and into the lower elevations. In general it is a dry region, although the summer months of June through September bring short spells of heavy rain on most afternoons. Winters are sunny and dry, and evenings can get cool, especially in the winter months. In general, there is not a large variation in temperature year round, only in precipitation.
