Isla Holbox Vacation Rentals, Condos, Villas and Beach Rentals
Isla Holbox
is an island located just north of Cancun at the tip of the Yucatan Peninsula, where the Gulf of Mexico meets the Caribbean Sea. It is a quiet, peaceful place, where only a small portion of the island is inhabited. It covers twelve square miles and the small town is approximately a dozen blocks on a narrow part of the island that can be walked from one side to the other. The ancient Mayans considered a sheltered lagoon located on Isla Holbox to be a sacred Fountain of Youth. Holbox means “black hole,” and perhaps referred to the cenotes or subterranean springs that open into underwater caves. Fishing is the mainstay of life on the island, and Isla Holbox has only recently opened up to tourism. This is not the place to come if you are looking for wild nightlife – unless it’s the kind found in nature. The geography of Isla Holbox combines tropical forest, lagoons, and beaches, cenotes and rivers that meander through four classifications of mangrove, all of which are protected under international law. It’s a fascinating place for anyone interested in experiencing nature up close and personal. Fishing and boating are available on the island, and it is also a bird watcher’s paradise. Restaurants serve fresh fish and seafood, and fresh fruits. Shopping is limited on Isla Holbox, but you will find the basic necessities. There are no banks located on the island.
