Isla Mujeres is a small fish-shaped island that seems to defy change. It is located in the Yucatan, five miles off the coast from Cancun. Isla Mujeres is five miles long and a half-mile wide, has sandy beaches on its northern end, and steep, rocky bluffs on its southern end. Legend has it that this island, whose name means “Island of Women,” was so-named by explorer Hernandez de Cordoba when he landed here in 1517 and found hundreds of female-shaped clay idols scattered on the beach. Others say it came from pirates, who would stash their women here before heading out to rob the high seas. However it got its name, Isla Mujeres is a magical place, where despite its development, has managed to retain its serenity, history and culture that is centered on the sea. Beaches on Isla Mujeres are tranquil, and the turquoise waters are calm as a lake. The beach at Playa Norte is easy to find, and you can wade out for 40 yards in waist-deep water. Isla Mujeres has become a popular spot for snorkeling and scuba diving, and as a peaceful respite for those looking to escape the crowds and noise of nearby Cancun. The best way to tour this tiny island is to rent a bike, moped or golf cart. Cars are uncommon, except for occasional taxis. The island can be reached by ferry from Puerto Juarez, 3 miles from downtown Cancun

Isla Mujeres Weather & Climate

The northeastern tip of the Yucatan Peninsula has a warm tropical climate – hot and humid. Swelteringly hot in summer, by some people’s standards. During June through August, expect monsoon-like downpours in the late afternoon or early evening. These storms usually pass by quickly and leave the night dry and cooler. Occasionally the rain lasts through the night. Hurricane season (June through October) usually brings wetter weather, though direct hits by hurricanes are rare. March and April are generally the driest months and July is drier and more predictable than August. Trade winds help keep coastal areas cooler, while interior jungle regions are more humid with higher temperatures.
