Ixtapa , and its’ sister-city, Zihuatanejo, is located along Mexico’s Pacific Coast, amid gorgeous natural beauty. Ixtapa is a young, exciting vacation resort, created in the 1970s, while Zihuatanejo is a quaint, old fishing village that sits on a picturesque bay. Beaches in both towns offer spectacular sun, sand and waves. Playa de Palmer, Ixtapa’s main beach, is active, spacious and quite beautiful, and is popular with scuba divers, parasailers and jet skiers. Across the road from the beach are clusters of outdoor cafes, restaurants and shops. Playa Quieta and Playa Linda are twin beaches located approximately 10 minutes northwest of downtown Ixtapa. The calm waves of these two beaches are separated by a pier, and are very popular with families. Zihuatanejo’s main beach, Playa Principal, is well suited for seashell collectors, fishing and boating. The Ixtapa/Zihuatanejo area offers a wide range of water sports, as well as an excellent bicycle trail, horseback riding on the beach, volleyball, hiking, tennis and golf. Accommodations range from sprawling resorts to budget hotels, many located just steps from the glittering beach. Restaurants in Ixtapa offer an array of authentic-tasting international cuisine, while Zihuatanejo’s restaurants serve freshly caught fish from the bay at consistent budget prices. Ixtapa’s main strip rocks to the beat with nightlife in fancy clubs and relaxed bars. Zihuatanejo is quieter, and is the place to go to sample local talent.

Ixtapa Weather & Climate

The Pacific Coast, near the cities of Troncones, Ixtapa and Zihuatanejo has a hot and humid climate, year round. Set against the backdrop of the Sierra Madre Mountains, this region does not experience much variation in temperatures – just in rainfall. The most consistently balmy weather is found along the Pacific Coast. The monsoon rainy season runs May through October, and rains tend to be brief but fierce, and occur mostly in the late afternoon, leaving the evenings dry, cool and comfortable. September usually sees the highest levels of humidity and precipitation. Winters along Mexico’s Pacific Coast are generally pleasant, with the same warm days and mild nights of summer, but drier and with less humidity.
