Mulege
is a pretty village located approximately 38 miles south of Santa Rosalia on Baja California Sur. The village sits between two hills in a valley beside a stream that joins an estuary that flows to the sea. First discovered in 1702 by Jesuit Father Juan Maria de Salvatierra, Mulege has become a favorite destination for tourists and ecologists and for those who enjoy sport fishing. The beautiful Bahia de Concepción is just a short distance from Mulege and offers swimming and soft, white sandy beaches amid awesome views. The town includes a historic mission church, a regional museum (located in the old state penitentiary building,) the river estuary and the beach at El Sombrerito. Mulege also offers many services for tourists, such as hotels, RV parks, restaurants, a bus depot, a national airport and fishing and scuba diving agencies. The Mulege fishing area is the most northerly section along the Sea of Cortez coast where warm water species, such as tuna, dorado, stiped marlin and sailfish, appear regularly in large numbers. The fishing changes dramatically at Mulege and begins to transition to the cooler waters and very strong tidal currents of the Sea of Cortez and Midriff area. Many consider Muleges fishing area to be the most accommodating of any location along the Baja California peninsula.
