Oaxaca
is located 340 miles southwest of Mexico City, and is characterized by its vast geographical and ethnic diversity. Oaxaca has one of the largest Indian populations in Mexico, with a richness of arts, crafts, folklore and culture. This city of eclectic grace sits high on a giant plateau that interrupts the Sierra Madre del Sur’s descent into the Oaxaca valley. Most parts of the city are easily accessible by foot, and taxis run anywhere in the city. Oaxaca is a wonderful city in which to shop. Local artisans create folk art, pottery, textiles, wooden animals, and fine art. The city’s Abastos Market, made famous in D. H. Lawrence’s “Mornings in Mexico,” is a lively center of bright colors, mountains of produce and fresh herbs. Several narrow highways leave the city and lead to beaches and great surfing, snorkeling and sunning spots. Oaxaca’s Puerto Escondido is a sunny port that is the site of several surfing championships each year. One other thing not to be missed while visiting Oaxaca is the food. The city’s traditional cookery is one of the finest and most elaborate in all of Mexico. Inland, Oaxaca is known as “the land of seven moles,” for their seven distinct kinds of multispiced mole sauces. On the coast, seafood reigns. Oaxaca celebrates Mexican and state holidays with an intensity that attracts many visitors. Many fiestas are held in the month of December, and the passionate “Day of the Dead,” is celebrated over three days in late fall.
