Patzcuaro Vacation Rentals, Condos, Villas and Beach Rentals
Patzcuaro
is a colonial jewel set in the Heartland of Central Mexico. A shoppers paradise, Patzcuaro has become a favorite among tourists. Set high in the mountains, the city is surrounded by rolling hills and forests, extending to the shores of Lake Patzcuaro. In town, it seems as if you have entered a time warp, as cathedral bells resonate through cobblestone streets and women wrapped in colorful wool rebozos (shawls) hurry to market in the chilly morning air. This beautiful community at the 7,200-foot level in the Sierra Madre is home to the Purepecha Indians, who have fished and farmed and sold their crafts here for centuries. The plazas in Patzcuaro overflow with stacks of homemade woolen sweaters, carved wooden toys, decorative masks and more. On November 1 each year, the town is filled with tourists on their way to Janitzio, an island in Lake Patzcuaro, where one of the most elaborate Day of the Dead ceremonies takes place. Restaurants in town specialize in seafood, and the largest meal of the day is served at midday, with many establishments closing down by 9pm. There are no large, deluxe hotels in Patzcuaro, but an ample number of clean, moderately priced properties, many within walking distance of the town square. Attractions include several historical buildings and sites, and the surrounding countryside is full of quaint villages selling beautiful handicrafts at bargain prices.
