Puebla
is the fourth largest city in Mexico and is located 75 miles east of Mexico City center. It is a city of contrasts, where gilded churches blend with trendy clothing stores, and in the shady town square, teens and older locals relax side by side. The city overflows with religious structures, and has more ex-convents, monasteries, chapels and churches per square mile than anywhere else in the country. It is also one of the few cities declared a Patrimony of Humanities site by the United Nations because of the splendor of its colonial structures. It is a safe city, where you can feel comfortable walking the streets alone, is known for their regional cuisine and has a wide variety of lodging in everything from a former 16th century convent to a modern day hotel. Shopping is also a pleasant activity in Puebla. You can watch sculptors and painters working in their galleries, and find pottery and other local arts and crafts in the many small shops in town, or buy from vendors set up along the city streets. Puebla is also famous for their camote, a candy made from sweet potatoes and fruit. If you have a sweet tooth, you’ll delight in walking along Sweet Street where shops compete to sell a variety of freshly made camote and other sugary treats. This beautiful city is a delightful mix of 17th and 18th century art and ideals and plenty of colorful Mexican energy.
