Punta Negra is located just a few minutes north of Puerto Vallarta along the north shore of Banderas Bay on the Central Pacific Coast of Mexico. This quaint fishing village is surrounded by pristine beaches and exotic jungle and is nestled between the towns of Sayulita and Punta de Mita. This is a great little town to mingle with the local people and enjoy the panoramic views of the ocean, or lounge on the uncrowded beach and watch the sunset. Here, life is pretty much the way it’s always been, the pace is slow and unhurried, and fiestas, siestas, and other Mexican traditions are still upheld. Banana, mango, papaya and tobacco plantations dot the countryside and tropical plants, flowers and the ocean provide great photographic opportunities. There are plenty of recreational activities in the area, as well, such as swimming, surfing, deep-sea fishing, kayaking, horseback riding, snorkeling and diving, tennis and golf. It’s an interesting look at Old Mexico, especially considering it is so close to one of the largest resort areas in Mexico. Punta Negra is just a 45 minute drive from the Puerta Vallarta International Airport, and is a short ten minutes from a well-known golf resort.

Punta Negra Weather & Climate

The Central Pacific Coast of Mexico is surrounded by jungle and receives 345 days of sunshine per year. Located on the same latitude as the Hawaiian Islands, its sub-tropical climate is often compared to Hawaii's. Temperatures reach 90 degrees F (32 C) during the summer, along with high humidity, but at night, the onshore breeze from the Bay of Banderas brings cool air that makes for pleasant sleeping conditions. The rainy season is June through September, however, August and September are considered the two “rainy” months. On average, September has 15 wet days per month, while January has only two. Rain usually doesn’t start until late in the afternoon, leaving most of the day free for outdoor activities. The Bay of Banderas also offers shelter from harsh Pacific winds and hard weather in winter. December and January, the peak tourist season, are generally warm, sunny and dry, with comfortable, balmy nights.
