It is a city of charm that seems to have been dropped into a ring of green mountains. Most everything in San Cristobal is within walking distance, and it makes a good base to explore the surrounding area’s lakes, villages, markets and archaeological sites. San Cristobal is considered one of the finest old colonial towns in Mexico, and it wasn’t until the 1950s that the roads into town were paved and the first cars arrived. Modernization came late to San Cristobal, but it is for this that many locals and tourists are thankful. The region is popular with backpackers, and this has created a plentiful supply of convenient, affordable hotels and hostels. Restaurants are also reasonably priced and cater to international tourists, with Italian, Chinese and French restaurants, as well as those who feature regional cuisine. Due to its altitude, the temperature in San Cristobal is often chilly, but is a refreshing change from the heat of lower valleys. The fog and low clouds that linger over the city in the early morning light gives it an almost surreal, mystical quality. This only adds to the remarkable beauty of this historic little town. |
