San Luis Potosi
is a city located in the state of the same name in central Mexico, at an elevation of 6,157 feet. This city dates to the late 1500s when it began as a mining town, and today it is a sprawling metropolis of more than half a million residents. It is an elegant and charming city with a very well preserved colonial center, anchored by a Plaza de Armas, or “Main Square.” The city’s 18th-century cathedral and the Government Palace flank this square. San Luis Potosi is home to one of Mexico’s main universities and is a lively, active, vibrant town. There is lots to do and see here and its’ historical significance makes it a must see during a colonial tour of Mexico’s inland destinations. Places of interest include the Calle Hidalgo, which is a pedestrian mall with some of the finest shops in the city, and the Casa de la Cultura, an art museum that exhibits the works of both national and regional artists. The Museo del Centro Taurino Potosino, or “Bullfighting Center Museum,” in San Luis Potosi contains an extensive collection of bullfighting memorabilia, and the Museo Nacional de la Mascara, is an interesting pink-colored mansion that dates to the 18th century and houses an assortment of masks from throughout Mexico. The area is also known for their prized Santa Maria rebozos, or shawls, which are so fine they can be pulled through a woman’s wedding ring. The city’s main park, Alameda, is a lovely spot to sit under the shade of the trees, as you take a break from sightseeing.
