San Miguel de Allende
is a vibrant community located in Guanajuato, Mexico, nestled on a hillside with a spectacular view of the Guanajuato Mountains. The entire town of San Miguel de Allende has been declared a national monument. San Miguel de Allende is filled with cobblestone streets, old mansions and centuries old cathedrals. The town is located four hours from Mexico City, and is home to two major art institutions, where North American students help make up the population of approximately 85,000. There are literary readings, art shows, a yearly jazz festival, psychic fairs, past-life regression classes – all to be found in San Miguel. Wander down the streets and discover 18th century mansions, lovely fountains and historic monuments – all reminders of San Miguel’s illustrious past. Most of the sites are clustered downtown, and San Miguel also has a surprisingly large number of very good international restaurants. In fact, San Miguel has a reputation for having the best “small town” dining in all of Mexico. Shopping is also very diverse. A special artisans’ market sells traditional crafts, furniture, ceramics, folk art, silver jewelry, tin, glass and more. One block north of Calle Mesones is a traditional covered market that sells fresh fruits, vegetables, flowers and meats. For lodging, San Miguel has a wide selection from which to choose – everything from cozy bed & breakfasts to elegant suites. Rooms fill up quickly in summer and winter, however, when northerners flock to this quaint and colorful town.
