Teotitlan del Valle
is most famous for its’ colorful, woolen, hand-woven rugs. It is located along Highway 190 in Oaxaca in south central Mexico. Teotitlan means, “Place of the Gods,” and the village of Teotitlan del Valle is well worth the time to visit. The landscape surrounding the town is formidable, lying at the base of the Sierra Norte Mountains. The village is within hiking distance of some very interesting places, such as El Picacho, or “Stone Brother,” and the Cuevita del Pedimento, which are three small caves that are visited by many to celebrate the New Year. Teotitlan del Valle is also a popular birding location, where the winter months are the best times to see migratory birds such as herons and kingfishers. Weaving in this village dates back to 500 BC, and there are about 150 families in Teotitlan del Valle today that specialize in weaving. Almost every family in the town earns all or part of their living from weaving. Family workshops are open to the public, and hundreds of people visit each day. Other handcrafts aside from rugs include elaborately decorated hand-made candles made of beeswax, shiny metallic paper and paper flowers. Across from the town’s artisan market is one of the best community museums in the region. Named Balla Xteee Guedchi Gulal, meaning, “place of the old town,” it opened in 1995 and houses several archaeological finds, crafts and traditional wedding exhibits. Teotitlan del Valle celebrates several holidays and special events throughout the year, and is home to The Precious Blood of Christ Church, a prime example of 17th century colonial architecture.
