Tepoztlan is a small village in central Mexico with cobblestone streets hidden among beautiful sandstone monoliths. At sunset, these monoliths throw off a russet glow, turning the whole town into a magical place. With this almost mythical beauty, and being crowned by a mysterious, ancient pyramid, it’s no wonder that Tepoztlan has become a favored spot for practitioners of Yoga, meditation, astrology, crystal healing and herbal medicine. However, the New Age has struck a comfortable balance with traditional Mexico in Tepoztlan, and massive commercial development is kept out. The town is friendly and has colorful restaurants and shopping. The main attraction is the tiny Tepozteco Pyramid, probably of Aztec origin, that is perched high on top of a hill. Hundreds climb it every weekend, and although steep, the trail is not arduous (but be sure to wear comfortable shoes.) Near the summit, however, you will have to climb a ladder to see the delightful view over the valley below. Other attractions in Tepoztlan include a lively weekend market, the Mardi Gras and the pre-Lenten Carnival.

Tepoztlan Weather & Climate

South-Central Mexico, in the area surrounding Mexico City, has an altitude of 7,240 feet above sea level. Due to this altitude, the region enjoys a cooler climate than the coastal areas, which is often a much-welcomed relief to visitors after exposure to the heat of the coastal cities and resorts. However, keep in mind that temperatures will become hotter and more humid the further south you travel and into the lower elevations. In general it is a dry region, although the summer months of June through September bring short spells of heavy rain on most afternoons. Winters are sunny and dry, and evenings can get cool, especially in the winter months. In general, there is not a large variation in temperature year round, only in precipitation.
