Tulum Vacation Rentals, Condos, Villas and Beach Rentals

Tulum , or the “City of Dawn,” stands on the edge of the “Etaib,” (Black Bees Jungle,) atop a rocky seaside cliff. It is the only walled city the Mayans built, and was first settled in the 6th century AD. Located approximately 80 miles southeast of Cancun and 25 miles southwest of Cozumel, Tulum is one of the Caribbean coast’s biggest attractions and the Yucatan peninsula’s most visited Maya ruin. The ancient ruins are an unforgettable sight as they tower above the crashing waves of the Caribbean. There are three separate areas to Tulum; the “crucero,” or crossroads, which is near the ruins, the beach cabanas and the small village of Tulum. As you arrive in Tulum on Mexico 307, you will come to the Crossroads, where you will find restaurants, hotels, mini-marts, and a gas station. Just south of the crossroads is a turnoff to the beachside cabanas, and a little further south from the beach is Pueblo Tulum (the village), which offers more hotels, restaurants and services. Sun worshipers flock to Tulum Beach for the swimming, snorkeling and sunbathing. (nude sunbathing is not uncommon.) Offshore, waves crash over Tulum’s barrier reef, the largest in the Americas; it runs the entire length of the Yucatan Peninsula and Belize. The cabanas of Tulum are world-famous and shouldn’t be missed. Sitting right on the sandy beach and made of sticks, they are without electricity and offer a chance to live without modern conveniences. Swim, work on your tan, build a late night bonfire and listen to local singers. A visit to Tulum is a fascinating adventure, however you spend your time.

Tulum Weather & Climate

The northeastern tip  of the Yucatan Peninsula has a warm tropical climate – hot and humid. Swelteringly hot in summer, by some people’s standards. During June through August, expect monsoon-like downpours in the late afternoon or early evening. These storms usually pass by quickly and leave the night dry and cooler. Occasionally the rain lasts through the night. Hurricane season (June through October) usually brings wetter weather, though direct hits by hurricanes are rare. March and April are generally the driest months and July is drier and more predictable than August. Trade winds help keep coastal areas cooler, while interior jungle regions are more humid with higher temperatures.
